When I was in my last year of University, I developed a bit of an eBay addiction. Looking back at some of the seriously questionable things I bought during my many hours of dissertation procrastination, it can't have been the buying that I was addicted to – I'm almost certain it was the flow of constant presents through the post that got me hooked.
Things are both different and not at all different now – I've given up fruitless eBay buying, but I still love getting parcels in the mail. Last week, during the beginning of the end of one of the biggest and most stressful book projects I've ever worked on, a flurry of beautiful, text-based presents began to arrive through the letterbox. It was a beautiful and tempting coincidence – now everywhere I look there is something I want to pick up and peruse.

Lula magazine: I bought this for myself in the middle of February when it was cold and dark and miserable, and, like a fairweather friend, now that the sun has come out, so has Lula. I bought a subscription – the best, most reliable place I have found to order it from is here. They ship everywhere.
A beautiful Fieldguided Thunder in our Hearts tote: I will definitely be wearing this all summer – it's even better in person, and the perfect size for hawking cameras, books, magazines etc around. I'm also entirely in awe of the beautifully careful packaging. I think it definitely qualifies as text based too. Thanks so much, Anabela.
Oh Comely magazine: I went all out and bought a subscription to Oh Comely because it's just so nice. It's surprisingly serious for a magazine with such an ethereal name, and the design and photography is perfectly pitched.
Behind the Zines – Self Publishing Culture: I have a real interest in self-publishing in all its forms at the moment, so kind Benjamin bought this book for me as a surprise gift. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I'm looking forward to hopefully learning a thing or two from it.
Now all I need to do is put this project to bed, and curl up on mine and get reading.

Oh what a delightful bunch of things. I have reduced my online purchasing of late but how I do miss getting things in the post. Even when you know what it is it can be pretty darn exciting. I haven't had a chance to see either of those magazines, I might try and pick one up in store at some stage (if they do that).
ReplyDeletei'm glad i'm not the only one who went through that phase. haha. i knew that it wasn't good for my wallet but oh how exciting it was to anticipate a new package in the mail. thank goodness i'm now able to exercise a bit more self-control.
ReplyDeleteyour new purchases are lovely. i also really wanted to get that tote from fieldguided too. thanks for sharing! :)
i went through an eBay obsession when i was finishing uni as well and it was for the exact same reason- i didn't need any of the things i bought, i just loved receiving the parcels in the mail + it was an excellent way to procrastinate.
ReplyDeletethen i found etsy and a whole new online obsession began!
god these all sound absolutely wonderful. i've been thinking about getting anabella's tote for a while now as well.
ReplyDeletehave you read gentlewoman yet? it's a marvel, really.
gosh, i love lula so much! i had no idea the issue was out! and that tote is wonderful :)
ReplyDeleteI adore Oh Comely, I particularly like the tag line 'keep your curiosity sacred'. Couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely bunch of treats. I've been seeing Lula everywhere online, so now I'm curious. And I love that tagline of Oh Comely! And that tote, I've been wanting to order that forever... Too bad things cost money ;)
